Natural Resource Awareness Activity Grants - **School** round March 2006

Queensland schools are invited to apply for Natural Resource Awareness Activity Grants to raise awareness of natural resource issues and their importance in our daily lives.

Grants of up to $2500 (GST inclusive) are available to schools to develop small, innovative and creative projects. Applications must be received by mail by close of business Friday 31 March 2006.

The grant activities will be the focus of Natural Resources Week in May 2006. Projects will occur or be profiled in or around that week to showcase community involvement.

The theme of Natural Resources Week 2006 is Managing Queensland's natural resources ... for today and tomorrow.

Educating and involving young people in natural resource management will encourage future generations to play a role in protecting our environment and ensuring the quality of our natural resources is maintained.

The grants will support projects that take an entertainment, educational or cultural approach to strengthening the community's awareness and involvement in sustainable natural resource management.

Message: The Department of Natural Resources and Mines weed and pest animal web site has undergone a major redevelopment, due to recognition of increasing use of the internet as a major source of information.
The redevelopment ensures the site describes pest management in Queensland in a comprehensive yet easy-to-understand manner.
The navigational system ensures information can be found in an easy and logical manner, reducing frustration and time, especially valuable for people in rural areas or with slow internet connections.
The address for the new site is: www.nrm.qld.gov.au/pests
There are many features of the new site that you may find advantageous including:

* A-Z listing of declared plants and animals and other significant pests
* Educational resources, including Weedbuster information, events and promotional material and Pest Patrol activity kits
* Pest management training and careers
* Regularly updated 'hot topics'
* Current newsletters and bulletins
* Index of technical and operational pest management publications
* Searchable pest distribution and predictive maps and mapping systems
Legislation, policies and permits
and much, much more!!

I'm sure that you will find the site useful and informative.
If you do, please refer it to work colleagues and the general public.
Increasing the public's awareness of pest management issues through mediums such as this web site will lead to a greater understanding of the impacts that pests have on our economy, environment, health and natural resources, and highlights the importance of pest management.
Unfortunately, the redevelopment means that all previous bookmarks and links to this site will be broken.
If you would like to provide a link to our web site, please only link to the pest management home page (www.nrm.qld.gov.au/pests) This will ensure your links will not break due to any future web site enhancements.
Any feedback on the site or suggestions for future developments should be directed to Nicole Blackett (email Nicole.Blackett@nrm.qld.gov.au)
